KEVIN CARNEY
FREELANCE MEDIA // PHOTOGRAPHER

In 1998, I enrolled in the journalism program at the State University of New York at Oswego editing for the Oswegonian, an independent, student-run news outlet. Our editorial team won awards for content, design, and were featured at the New York Press Association in 1999 for a variety of stories, and our position at the forefront of online student reporting.

During the mid-2000’s I expanded my interest in photography and visual arts. I was hired to assist an award-winning freelance photographer produce editorial content, and portraits. Under his guidance I learned a series of skills that built on my education in print journalism, and gained a better appreciation for the dedication it takes to excel in this field. Through him, I worked with media outlets that include Time, Newsweek, Businessweek, Smithsonian, and Washingtonian magazines.

I decided to strike out as a full-time freelance photographer on election night, 2016. My proximity to the White House enhanced the feeling of significance tied to the results of the election. I now document the culture in Washington, D.C. during the early time of this administration, and provide my services to news outlets, corporations, and the public.

Being so close to the U.S. Capitol, Supreme Court, and White House, I can quickly respond to events that have significant political and cultural implications. My experience in the District has helped me grow a network of contacts involved in politics, culture, and the arts. My contacts offer an inside track to document historic events.

I specialize in portraiture, editorial spreads, arts and entertainment, and corporate events. I am also an affiliate photographer with HomeVisit, providing architectural images for their use on both the web, and in a varying assortment of print media formats. I recently joined Getty as an affiliate photographer shooting editorial images, and will be expanding my portfolio with images from around the D.C. metro area.

Don’t take my picture, bro.
